WHAT'S THE deal with 3rd Street at Forbes in North Vancouver?’ Well, it’s pretty much like any other intersection: Four way, traffic lights, a few signs. (“What signs?”) _~» Eastbound traffic traveling along Third Street nearing Forbes Avenue (approaching the Mohawk gas sta- -, tion) must a) in the left lane, pro- | ceed straight ahead (only) or b) in the curb lane, TURN RIGHT. (ONLY !!!), Sad but true, many dri- vers attempt to carry on straight from that curb lane. Perhaps they « think the lane is also for the people going to the Mohawk. (At one ; point, long ago, one could travel ” straight through in that fane but, alas, those days are gone.) Maybe » they think they can merge after the " intersection. Perhaps they did not read the signs. (“Signs?”) Yes, signs. Two big, fat signs, printed black and red on white, which read: “Curb Lane MUST Turn Right.” Three (3!!!) white arrows point- °. SIGNALS ing to the right, painted on the pavement in the right lane. One overhead white on black arrow pointing to the right and reading “Forbes.” (There are also two “No Right Turn on Red” that are V6 engine drives - From page 33 However, it’s the additional torque and smoothness of this new . powerplant that Accord V6 owners will appreciate. The V6 is definite- “ly quieter and smoother than the 2.2-litre four-cylinder powerplants, and has plenty of power on tap for _ passing and hill climbing. On the freeway, the engine turns over a low.2500 r.p.m. at 100 km-h (62 m.p.h.), and propels the Accord quietly and effortlessly — the | traits of a great highway car. ’ From a driver and passengers’ standpoint, the V6 gives the Accord a more substantial, more luxurious feel. This is helped by wider tires and a beefed-up sus- © pension that improve stability and handling. It is hard to tell a V6 Accord from a standard Accord just by looking, but there are some differ- ences, The Accord V6 is 70 mm (2.8 in.) longer and 10 mm (.4 in.) higher and has a new hood and chromed grille trim. A discreet V6 emblem resides on the rear deck lid, and the alloy wheels are _ Unique to the V6. Under-the-skin changes include a suspension that’s been beefed up . to accommodate the larger V6 engine, upgraded four-wheel-disc . brakes with ABS, more noise insu- lation, and a front-end with more crash protection. The V6 Accord is about 25 kg (55 Ibs.) heavier than a four-cylinder model with more of its weight in the front. The standard, and only avail-, able. transmission is a four-speed automatic with what Honda calls, grade logic — a computer senses throttle position, speed and engine load, and prevents the engine from “hunting” on long grades. This transmission shifts very smoothly ignored upon occasion.) At any rate, these’signs are declaring a taw. Not a guide. Not friendly advice. A fact. You simply must turn right in that lane. Please read these signs. They are for you, the driver. Those of you that want to use the Mohawk must come from the «. center Jane. You should also check for those that thought they could come from the curb lane. The bus stop by Mohawk was moved ahead “so buses wouldn't need to contend with this dilemma. Richard Read; a “full timer” at Mohawk, says there is an accident at this intersection about once a month — near misses once or twice a day! Like that flakey, old song says: “Sign, sign, everywhere a sign. Blockin’ out the scenery/breakin’ my line. Do this, don’t do that. Can’t you read the sign?” _ Shaun Conlin is the owner/oper- ator of Upper Levels Driving School. As you might expect, fuel econ- omy is not as good as the four- cylinder model, but it is reasonable for a V6: Transport Canada’s city rating is 12.5 1/100 km (22 m.p.g.) and highway fuel consumption is 8.8 1/100 km (32 m.p.g.). : Accord V6s come very well- : equipped: four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, dual airbags, power steering, air-conditioning, power windows and mirrors are all stan- dard equipment. One omission; leather upholstery is not available. ' Though many people might find it hard to justify spending almost $30,000 on a four-cylinder Accord, the V6 puts the Accord into the near-luxury league where $30,000 is commonplace. The Accord V6 EX starts at $30,995 and is built in Ohio. “LE” SPORTS COUPE #4031 M. 5.
