How did you get inte radio?: ‘'1
went to high school in Nanaimo
and a fellow that I knew from
high school was working at the
radio station in Nanaimo, CHUB,
doing the all-night show.

“} thought: ‘Gosh, any monkey
could do this.’ You play records
and get paid for it. I thought it
was kind of interesting. I got a
job in a department store after 1
got out of school and didn’t really
know what I wanted to do.

“This fellow from high school
quit the radio station and phoned
me and said: ‘Why don’t you go
down and apply for the job?’ So I
did and I got it.

“That was in the summer of
1969, and I did the all-night show
in Nanaimo for a couple of years
and then got into the news
department and covered council
meetings, school boards, protest
meetings and everything you. could
possibly iniagine.”’

Do you listen to any other radio
stations?: ‘‘Nat often. I don’t pay
a lot of attention to competition. I
will listen to the hockey game on
CKNW from time to time, but
I’m not worried about what the
competition is doing.

“We've always taken a position
at CFOX that we're going straight
ahead and we're doing this and
everybody else can do what they
want. There isn’t very much new
in radio that hasn’t already been
done somewhere else.

“Rock ‘n’ roll radio is very
much performance-oriented, It’s
not the same as a CKNW or
CKWX.”

What do you like to de to relax
when you're not working?

“Sports. I golf and play baseball,
J umpire in a North Shore league.
I like to play with my son, play

“It's a real tension reliever, not
that I'm a person who has a lot of
stress, at Jeast I don’t feel it. My
work is an outlet for me.

“t feel very fortunate to have a
job that I really enjoy doing. It’s
never the same, never boring. I
want to have fun when I’m work-
ing, and Uve been able to do
that.”*

Does your son listen to you?:
“‘He’s just starting to get the idea
of the job that I have, although
he’s been to the radio station a lot
of times.

“I don’t use my real name on
the air, Marshall’s not my real
name, it’s Holley and I’ve explain-
ed to him that it’s just a name I
use on the radio.

“Recently he’s been calling me
Kerry Marshall and will say: ‘Is
Kerry Marshall going to make my
dinner now?’ ””

Is it hard io get such a high
energy fevel going so early in the
morning?: ‘I don’t find it difficult
at all. You have to get up early
and go on the air and you have to
sound good becatise everybody is
listening.”

‘When the red light comes on
and you get the beads of sweat on
your forehead, that'll keep you
awake.”’
