By Layne Christensen Fashion Reporter Bringing fashion out of the Stores and onto the tables, the Ambleside Inn at 1495 Marine Dr. presents designs from local bouti- ques at its regular Tuesday lun- cheon shows. The restaurant first started the popular walk-about shows 12 years ago to help drum up business for the local boutiques, said Martha Bruecker, who — along with her husband — opened the restaurant in 1979. Although the couple sold the testaurant last March, Bruecker still keeps a hand in the operation of the restaurant and the coor- dination of the Tucsday luncheon shows. The Ambleside Inn's latest presentation featured fashions from North Shore-based Margareta Design. There are six Margareta locations in Western Canada — five of them in the Lower Mainland, inctuding the West Vancouver boutique at 1441 Bellevue Ave. The casually elegant daywear and evening separates were - modelled by Margareta employees, not professional models — an ap- proach which Bruecker says is practical and favored by the res- taurant’s clientele. “People like to see everyday people wearing the clothes,”’ she ‘FASHION FILE FASHION FILE is a weekly Sunday column. During the main course (prices range from $6.50 for the omeiette of the day to $9.95 for a N.Y. steak sandwich) Margareta Design fashion coordinator Maureen Elliott modelled a shawl-collared cherry red wool and cashmere jacket worn over a black mock turtle and matching jersey knit slim pant. Elliott explained that the jersey separates come in five colors — red, fuschia, navy, black and hunter green — and are dyed to match the wool and cashmere jackets. For dessert, the restaurant pres- ented a tray of exquisite confec- tions and Margareta Designs pres- ented luxurious black and silver brocade separates and a ’90s take on tuxedo dressing. A striking side-wrapped tuxedo jacket in black wool crepe with silk charmeuse shawl collar and tie worn with a short black lace skirt was a standout. The next luncheon show is Tuesday, Nov. 24, featuring fash- ions from Champagne Taste. There are no more shows sched- uled before Christmas but one or two may be added between now and then, said Bruecker. The restaurant wiil take a break over the holiday season and con- tinue the shows ‘‘as soon as peo- ple have recovered from Christmas,’’ she said, adding that by then the spring fashions will be in the stores. There is no charge for the shows beyond the price of iunch, and reservations are suggested (phone 922-0101) as the 150-seat restaurant is usually full between noon and 2 p.m. during the fash- ion presentations.
