86 — Wednesday, May 13, 19S2 — North Shore News Lecture discusses adolescent self-esteem NORTH SHORE Family Services Society is offering a mini-lecture to help parents nurture their teen’s self-esteem. Linda Adair, a family life educator and counsellor, will discuss building your teen’s self- esteem on Wednesday, May 20 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Carson Graham Secondary School in North Vancouver. “*Whenever there’s a transition, one’s self-esteem is up for grabs,’’ says Adair. ‘“‘As teens change from children to adults, they have to reinvent their image of themselves, and their. self-esteem is bound to be put off balance.’’ Adair, who has herself parentec two teenage children, says adoles- cents have many developmental tasks to complete. They have to define values, separate from their parents and choose a career, To build self-discipline and good self-esteem, she says they need appropriate guidance and the tight structure within which to explore their new and growing selves. Adair will discuss adolescent development and tasks, what self-esteem is, how to cope with a discouraged teen, and when to seek professional help. Partici- pants will have time to share and receive feedback on their own ex- periences. The mini-lecture will cost $15 and participants are advised to pre-register.
