WestEx brings together under one roof a number of major musical instrument manufacturers, distributors and related service exhibitors. It’s a good chance to check out some of the new gear out on the market. Music West executive producer Maureen Jack, now teamed with co-producer Laurie Mercer, acted in 1986 on a perceived need for a forum connecting musicians with music business players. What began with the West Coast Music Conference has grown into a full- time job to bring together the four-day Music West event. Music West has helped to heat up the creative-business critical mass that currently sees Van- couver rank as the most important music hotspot ir: the country. Said Jack, ‘What happens at a conference like this, business is undertaken on a number of levels. The top professionals who come in do business with each other, and they’re also coming here to take a look at the new talent. “The mid-level professionals, independent managers and pro- ducers, are here to make contacts. There are the entertainment law- yers, the promoters, and the agents; they’re all coming to broaden their client bases. “Then there are the neophytes that are coming through, the del- egates that want to learn about the industry. They come and the value to them of the seminars and workshops is incredible because the industry is changing constant- ly,"’ she said. For more information call 684- 9338.
