Those who caught the set live
earlier this year witnessed a grand,
loud, briiliantly-executed show. At
maximum volume, Young’s
definitive guitar aliack was a
glorious mess cf obnoxious feed-
back thrash and honey-coated
harmonics.

As recorded, the raging beast is
somewhat restrained in the mix
and rides the rock ‘n roll trail in
democratic fashion with fellow ©
Crazy Horse members.

., And then there is Arc. it’s an
experiment worth the price of

a rabid Young fan. Arc takes the
wailing resolutions of a number of
the songs appearing on Weld and
weaves them into a single, lengthy
sonic tapestry. Arc will either leave
you stone cald (it being an exam-
ple of cretaceous onanism) or with
sweaty brow (it being a creative

the sentiments here are fatuous.

the proceedings, ‘‘...no new
ideas in the house...”

Thankfully, musical ideas con-
tinue to be refined in the hands of
Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, who
produce this one.

District appoints chief

NORTH VANCOUVER District
Library has announced the ap-
paointment of Noreen Ballantyne as
chief librarian of the District library
system.

Ballantyne comes to the post
after serving as acting chief librazi-
an of the system for the past six
months. She is the second person
to be appointed chief fibrarian in
the library's 27-year history. The
first was Enid Dearing, who retired
in June.

Bailantyne has worked as
branch librarian at Seycove and
most recently as branch head and
deputy chief librarian at Lynn
Valley Library.

Born in Manitoba, she received
her B.A. from the University of
Winnipeg and bachelor of library
