Michael Becker RECORD REVIEW And it is a sorry slate of affaus when a music system allows a country artist of this calibre to wallow in the shadows while ar- tistic inferiors make much mainstream country hay. For the 20-o0dd years Jimmie Dale Gilmore bas been making music he’s been most closely associated with Butch Hancock and Joe Ely. Together the three performed as the Flatlanders, a country acoustic-string band. They put out an album in 1972 which saw a comeback in Australia of all places. The album has recently been reissued by Rounder Records. Gilmore’s output has been sporadic and limited but what there is shines with an authenticity all too rare in most modern music heard these days regardless of the genre. More people will have an op- portunity to hear this music. Gilmore is one of several artists featured on a new set of releases, the Elektra Nonesuch American Explorer series. After Awhile covers 20 years of musica! output. The melodies resonate with the power of the memory of an old triend and every song sings with sagacious substance. The singer-songwriter will be making a first concent appearance in Vancouver July 19 at the Town Pump. Music Now spoke with Gilmore last week, Music Now: Do you still per- form much with joe Ely or and Butch Hancock? Gilmore: “We're a group of friends who still hang out and play together. Joe Ely, Butch Hancock and | played the Montreux Jazz Festival last week in Switzecland, if you can imagine that. We were very well received. It was great, like a dream, What they did is they had a Texas night. And Brenda Lee was on that night and fF got to know her some. That by itself would have been worth the whole trip.
