By Martin Millerchip Contributing Writer Sonny and Shirley Dobay, the owners of the longtime district landmark, appeared before coun- cil on Monday night to plead for a chance to continue their Crab Shop business in its present 2468 Dollarton Hwy. lecation. “We just don’t know what we'll do now if we lose this business," said Sonny Dobay, who wears a pacemaker after a recent heart at- tack and faces open heart surgery in the new year. Dobay said he has lived in North Vancouver all his life and that the business has been in the family for almost 45 years. The Crab Shack was formerly located at 2817 Dollarton, but the Dobays were forced to move the fish shop in 1986 to make way for a housing development. Their present site was Icased to them by the Vancouver Port Corp. ‘‘so long as ‘The Crab Shop’ and ‘‘s principals comply with all municipal bylaws, rules and regulations." A temporary-use permit was issued for the site by council in September 1986 after a public hearing to amend the Maplewood Official Community Plan. Under the Municipal Act a temporary-use permit is valid for two years and may be renewed only once for a further two years. The Dobays were reminded of this when their permit was renew- ed in 1989, and when the renewal expired on Oct. 1, 1990 they were told by planning staff that ‘‘the use of the land should be ceased See Shop puge 12 Friday, December 14. 1990 - North Shr.re News - 11 RABBITS...WABBITS BUGS...BEcTLES BUSES...VANS NO MATTER HOW YOU SAY IT 985-5022 985-1008 WE DO iT THE BEST - GUARANTEED Complete mechanical repairs, paint and body work.
