VV rock pang making gcou inings nappen Bob Mackin News Reporter TF North Vancouver's Roscoe P. Coltrane doesn’t make it in the rock and roll business, there’s always golf. “The band’s missicn statement is par for the course,” laughs guitarist Mark Conlin. “We vow to golf every town we play in on tour,” adds Corey Grant, the pop-rock quintet’s bassist and fong-drive specialist. Mountain biking, not golf, is the band’s focus this weekend. Roscoe P. Coltrane, named after a popular character on TV’s Dunes of Hazzard, is among 14 acts set to entertain at the two-day Wrap Zone North Shore Festival on Mount Seymour. Roscoe P. Coltrane is scheduled for the mainstage Saturday at 4 “Nothing beats summer festivals and playing out oot,” says keyboardist Pete Ryznar. “The younger generation needs to go out and see live music more often than going out co a rave and Popping ecstacy.” Live music venues on the North Shore are limited these days; the band’s most recent hometown gig was a Canada Day headliner at the Avalon Hotel Pub. Most of its shows are across Burrard Infet. {f you miss Roscoe P. Coltrane this weekend, the group’s at the Starlish Room in Vancouver Aug. 13 to open for Luma, a new band featuring former members of Blind Melon and Pearl Jam. Roscoe P. Coltrane plans to use a four-song demo recorded by Paul Baker at nearby Baker Street Studio as a springboard to a full- length release in the new year. Production whiz Baker is welcom- ing the band back to his studio Aug. 17 to track a batch of new songs. “Mest records, the first two tuncs are great and the rest is filler,” says drummer Jon Hartline, explaining the gradual approach to recording. “By the time we get this one done, if there’s 10 songs on the record, we'll have seven great ones.” The band was born last fall when- charismatic singer Clayton Blancard began co-managing Flartline’s Pier 94 studio and rehearsal space on East Esplanade. Hartline is a veteran of early 90s North Vancouver grunge band Mushroom Trail and moved into what became Pier 94 five years ago. Blancard, who also plays guitar, introduced Hartline to Conlin and Ryznar. Grant was just a phone call away for Blancard after the band’s original bassist quit. Pier $4, a hangout for a variety of local independent bands, became the home Ease for Roscoe P. Coltrane, which made its live debut Jan. 29 at Vancouver’s Pic Pub. “Putting a band together and having the right chemistry is like falling in love,” Hartline : says. ”You can’t make it happen —either it happens or it doesn’t.” Festival highlights §&% 1999 Wrap Zone North Shore Festival, Saturday July 31 and Sunday Aug. 1 at Mount Seymour. _ Live music noon to 7 p.m. both days: Saturday:.
