4 - Friday, April 20, 1990 - North Shore News Top soccer talent to play for LGH Foundation CANADA’S TOP soccer talent will descend on the North Shore this Sunday when the Vancouver 86ers face the Canadian national soccer team at North Vancouver's Kinsman Stadium in an exhibition game to raise funds for the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation. By ELIZABETH COLLI News Reporier “I’ve got the two best teams in Canada coming out to play a game and entertain the North Shore," said John Palmer, president and -FINAL S DX S FRI. 10am—9pm SAT. 10am—6pm founder of the Sportsman’s Soccer League and the event's organizer. Coached by North Vancouver resident Bobby Lenarduzzi, the 86ers have been almost unbeatable over the past two years in the Ca- nadian Soccer League. The defending CSL champions will test the mettle of the national team, coached by West Van- couver’s Tony Waiters, the former coach of the now defunct Van- couver Whitecaps. Palmer, a class one referee, said he initiated the annual exhibition games, which started last year, as a fundraiser for LGH after reading in the North Shore News that the hospital foundation needed funds. “Ef there’s one thing we have in common with the hospital it is that, because we're athletes, we get injured. They've got tremendous people who put our guys back together. I'm all for them,”’ Palmer said. He anticipates this year’s games will draw as many as 2,000 spec- tators, raising an estimated $10,000. Last year, a irial run for the ex- hibition day, a crowd of 500 came out to watch the 86ers reserve team defeat the Sportsmen All-Stars 3-2 and Team B.C. edge Norvan ANAF Unit 45 by the same margin. In addition to raising funds, Palmer said the exhibition game helps strengthen the league’s ties with the community. “The idea behind it is we're sportsmen,’’ he said. ‘‘We're dedicated to the highest level of soccer with the fairest play and with community involvement.""
