WHY IS it that some people seem
to cope well with life’s problems
and others barely manage to sur-
vive?

The North Shore Family Ser-
vices Society says the answer to
this question is different for each
person. There is a way to discover
the reasons for your behavior.
The clues are to be found in your
family background.

Family matters, says the society.
More than anything else, the fami-
ly that you were raised in (family
of origin) influences how you
think, feel, communicate and solve

tionship.

warm, loving and supportive or
cool, strained and conflicted,
makes an impression on you as a
child which may well be out of
your awareness.

To understand yourself and why
you react to things the way you do,
the society says it helps you to ex-
amine the dynamics of your family
of origin. Information about your
parents’ relationship, your sibling
position, family myths or secrets,

births, deaths, accidents, affairs,
divorces, moves, all provide clues
to your personality and present-
day behavior patterns and at-
titudes.

All this and more is the topic of
a North Shore Family Services
mini-lecture series called Family
Matters given by Andrea Kiss,
marriage and family therapist.

Family Matters will be held at
Carson Graham Secondary School,
7:30-9:30 p.m. The fee is $8 a ses-
sion or $20 for the course.
