New North Van City
administrator named

ONE OF the challenges facing North Vancouver City in the
future is maintaining existing services without large tax
hikes, says the city’s new administrator.

“Tt’s to ensure the taxpayers are
protected from large capital re-
quirements in the future.’ said
Gerry Brewer, who assumed the
top staff post March 1.

Brewer, 52, joined the city in
1955 as a junior drafisman.

In 1974, Brewer was named the
director of the city’s purchasing
and property department, a posi-
tion he held until his posting to the
administrator’s job.

from among 60 applicants ‘‘just
makes the job so much easier’’ as
the appointment is a reaffirmation
of ability, said Brewer.

Starting salary for the ad-
ministrator’s position is approx-
imately $63,000.

“One of my biggest jobs is going
to be assisting council in assessing
the changing community needs to
ensure tax dollars are spent in
areas appropriate to meet those
needs,’’ said Brewer, who oversees
the city’s 240 employees.

In June, Brewer will oversee the
installation of a new computer
system, a project that was started

under now-retired city ad-
ministrator Ed Raymond.

An ambitious plan, the new
system will streamline city opera-
tions by having one data base from
which all municipal departments
may draw information.

“It's the information depart-
ments that need to make decisions
in their areas of undertaking, "
said Brewer. ‘What we're trying
to doi is pull it all together.”"
