Canada | pension | icontributions | to increase | From page 30 changes. The maximum CPP benefit will soon be $500, which would produce a reduced pension at age 60 of $350 a month. RRSP funds could be used to bridge the gap and create an in- come equivalent to the old age pension of a further $300 a month. It would therefore take very little to create additional pension in- come of around $650. Many older workers, particularly single, self- supporting women, will find this a blessing which enables them to en- joy a few precious years of retire- ment before age 65. At the other end of the scale, people who wish to continue work- ing beyond age 65 need not take their Canada Pension. Not only might they not need the money, they certainly wil! not wish to pay tax on it at their highest rate whilst still working. On the other hand, some may prefer to take their pen- sion as early as possible and roll it over into their RRSP where they feel they may achieve a_ better return. Although this could be done until 1990 under present rules, it is not recommended for most people. The full effect of in- dexing would be reduced and theie’ is always the possibility of loss through the failure of high-risk in- vestments in the RRSP. The bad news is that contribu- tions will begin to increase yearly starting next year. These new rules are welcomed as the government continues to give increased incentives to taxpayers to provide for their own retirement and greater flexibility to tailor- make their own personal retire- ment plans.
