BASED ON FAITH ‘Right’ word from a friend DO YOU REMEMBER When someone said exactly the right thing to you? Of course you did not know at the time that it was exactly the right word for you, but later you could twig to how important it was. When |! was a lowly new- boy at Upper Canada College one of the Masters said to me, ‘‘I think you can do it, don’t you?’’ 1 was an average sort of hero-worshipper at the time and if HE thought so, naturally | began to think so too. What he said was the right word for me. A successful psychothera- pist told me about the time (I think she said she was 17) when she was trying to decide on the direction of what she called her ‘‘life-work’’. In typical 17-year-old fashion, she was asking advice of anyone and everyone. She remembers feeling differently about Tony telling her she should do it (whatever it was) and Marion giving her the very same advice. She heard a few ‘‘do-its’’ and a few ‘‘don’t do its’’ and was baffl- ed by noticing that some ‘‘do-its’’ pleased her and some did not while some ‘don’t do its’’ pleased her the growing edge by Hayden Stewart Freeiunce Counsetior Havden Siewart may be reached at 261-6242 for appotnunents for individual, family or group counselling and some didn’t. She asked still another person, ‘‘Should I do it or shouldn’t 1?’’ And THIS person said to her, ‘“‘Why not?’’ She knew right away, She says, that she had just heard ‘’the right word’’. A young fellow in Yellow- grass, Saskatchewan once hung around after a youth conference he was attending, to talk to a counsellor who had been one of the guest leaders at the conference. He told the counsellor that he had made a sort of tentative decision about what he wanted to ‘‘be’’ and then ad- ded, ‘‘But 1 think I’ve made the wrong choice. I don’t feel I’m up to it. I think I’d pro- bably not do very well at it.’’ The counsellor smiled at him and said, in a good clear voice, ‘‘Bull!’’ and turned and walked away. The kid, who is now a bit past middle- age and good at the thing he is doing, reports, with the ad- vantage of hind-sight, ‘‘He said exactly the right thing.’”’ A young school teacher went to her principal and said, ‘‘] need some education about an ethical knot I’m try- ing to untie.’’ She told him what she was wrestling with and he replied, ‘*You say you need some education to help you in this decision you are wrestling with. Well, educa- tion is really the fine art of discovering what you already know. Try it!”’ All those ‘‘right words”’ seem to have been based on a faith in the person they were addressed to. That’s what made them ‘‘right’’ THIS Mice ONLY ANY LIVING ROOM DINING ROOM (or dining area) $3495 and HALL CLEANED (Regardless of Size) INVYYYV I SS CARPET aun, > CLEANED |; S LI IIPTIPPENTS any living room and hall (Regardiess of Room Size) NEW — Truck-mount power in a compact portable — Our extraVac 750 steam machines Happy Holidays are here ...
