Kurt Kolbe tried to
get a mortgage a few
years ago, but was
refused. His credit was

good, the banks said,

but at 54 he was too
old.”

But Kolbe didn’t. abandon
his dream of owning his own
house and today he.owns a
beautiful home overlooking
a lake.

He started with just $50
and this is how he did it:

Kolbe designed the house
himself:-“It's a pre-fab and
the parts‘are small enough to
fit in a garage.

He obtained a ‘merchant's
licence which allowed him to
buy building supplies
wholesale. Then, when cach
paycheque came. in, he
would take $50 and com-

plete a wall or roof. section, —
or whatever part of the |
house he was working on at_

the time.
After a year, he had
almost a complete house. So

he went looking for a place

to put his home.
He found a suitable site in
the country for $3,000. Since
