One of the hardest
amateur sport volunteers in
Canada — track—and_field
coach oyd Swindells of
Vancouver —- was, ‘honored
by . the Provincial Govern-
ment on Tuesday with a
special Year of the Child and
Family Achievement Award.

Swindells received his
award in the North Wing of
Vancouver. General
Hospital’s Heather Pavillion
Cafeteria.

The presentation was
made on behalf of the
Minister of Human
Resources, Hon. Grace
McCarthy, by former world
record holder for the 100
metre and 100-yards, Harry
Jerome of Vancouver.

Jerome, who represented
Canada at three Olympics,
credits’ Swindells with
helping him the most during
his running career.

Swindells’ award reads:
“Presented with gratitude on
behalf of the people of B.C.
in recognition of public- |
dedication to
children and families.”

Hockey League. But not any
more,

Much of last summer was
taken up by news con-
ferences announcing many
Canuck signings including
nine new players and a new
coach. And this summer,
general manager Jake
Milford, his coaching and
scouting staffs have spent
hundreds of hours pouring
over scouting reports in
preparation for the August 9

Scheduled starting time is
8:00 a.m. and members of
the news media are cordially
invited to attend.

This year’s procedure
features several changes
over past drafts. The biggest
difference is that 19-year-
‘olds will be cligible for claim
as well as the traditional 20-
year-olds. But if a club
chooses a 19-year-old and he
fails (o make the NHL team’s
roster in the 1979-80 season,
he will be returned to his
junior team for the duration
of the season. Next year, 18-
year-olds will be cligible.
