That _was the lesson of Thursday's provincial election, ‘which saw Social Credit candidates sweep to victory in all three North Shore ridings, gaining one seat from the Liberals in the process. Meanwhile, the remainder . .of.B,C. administered a sharp ‘slap'on the wrist to Premier Bill; Bennett’s party— returning the Socreds to power. with their majority slashed from 15 to 5 in an enlarged 57-seat Legislature and, even more significantly, their lead in the popular vote cut from 10 per cent to a ‘fraction over two per cent. In North Vancouver- Seymour Jack Davis, former Socred incumbent, won with a handy 2,610 majority over the NDP'’s Joy Langan. In North Vancouver- Capilano Socred first-timer Angus Ree ousted NDPer Mike Copes by an impressive 5,803 votes. - ' West Vancouver-Howe Sound's veteran § Socred representative, Labor Minister Allan Williams, did it all over again with a \, ALLA Chris England (Cons.) .............+ 1,852 Robert Cook (Gay Alliance) .......... 124 spectacular 10,673 lead over Lawrence Minchin, the NDP candidate. .t The two minority parties on the North Shore went down to third or fourth-place defeats in all three ridings, despite some vigorous campaigning and (on the part of the Tories) high hopes of gaining a voice at last in Victoria. Conservatives Joy Gilmore and Chris England wound up third in North Van-Seymour and West Van-Howe Sound respec- tively, while their party colleague Bill Nichol trailed fourth in North Van- Capilano. j Rookie Liberal leader Jev Tothill, trying for his first seat, took the bottom spot in Seymour, with Liberal Frank Warburton doing © slightly better at third place in Capilano. The story for the Con- servatives and Liberals was the same clean across the province, with not a single member of cither party elected—Conservative lea- der Vic Stephens losing his own seat to the Socred candidate in Oak Bay- Gordon Head. .
