French info offered | WEST VANCOUVER parents in terested in obtaining information on French Immersion programs locally or across the country have a resource in Weet Van Parents for French. A chapter of the provinical and national organization, the West Van Parents for French is a sup- port group for parents with children in immersion programs. It is very active during the school year, holding a French book sale, public speaking contest and garage sale, whch was this year held in Hollyburn Elementary in May. Group president Patty Clerkson says that French Immersion *‘opens a whole new world of op- portunities for (the students)’ and helps increase their listening skills. Although she says there is a waiting list in North Vanouver, West Van still has open enrolment in its program. Early immersion is offered from Kindergarten to Grade 3 at Hollyburn Elementary, Grades 4 to 6 at Pauline Johnson, and Grades 7 io 10 at Sentinel Second- ary. Late enrolment in an immer- sion program is available for Grades 7 to 9 at Sentinel. Although children in an immer- sion program are not taught English in school until Grade 4, Clerkson says that she does not expect to see any difference in the English language skills of immer- sion or non-immersion students upon high school graduation. The first class of immersion students to go through the system is currently in Grade 10. When they graduate, they will receive both an English and French language diploma. For more information on im- mersion programs that are available on the North Shore or in the rest of Canada, call Clerkson at 922-9451. In recognition of the opening of Environment Week, the public was invited to a May 29 open house at the Phy! Munday Nature House, a 1943) army hut that the Guides converted into a natural resource centre. During the open house, visitors were able to learn about the physi- cal geography of Lighthouse Park with Capilano. College teacher Sheila Ross, study local wildflowers with Elaine Graham, part-time park caretaker and wife of the assistant lighthouse keeper, take a general nature walk with naturalist Laurie Donovan, and go birdwatching with Dick Canning, who works at UBC. May Loudon, chairman of the nature facility, said approximately 160 people came to the open house. Although she says the aim of the nature house is to ‘“‘promote public appreciation of nature’? and conservation of local resources, she says there is no money to have someone keep the house open on a full-time basis. However, the Guides are offer- ing guided nature tours of the park every Saturday morning until Aug. 27. Participants are asked to meet the volunteer tour leader at the notice board in the parking lot at 10 a.m. Ry PEGGY WHITTAKER Villager Reporter Guides and Brownies use the fa- cility when they are earning their nature badges and learning camp skills. It is also used for Ranger conferences, opening and closing dinners and leader training. Loudon says that prior to the house's official opening in June 1985. the Girl Guide organization had asked the municipality of West Vancouver for permission to use the facility one day per year for the purpose of taining their Guide leaders. This continued for 15 to 20 years, until the Guides negotiated an official licence to occupy the house from West Vancouver. Having converted it for their needs, the Guides proclaimed the facility the Phyl Munday Nature House, after the woman who Loudon says was “‘the first lady to inspire me to study nature.”’ Loudon, a 20-year Guider herself, says that Munday, a local pioneer, naturalist and well-known mountaineer, who was the first woman to climb Mount Wad- dington, has about 60 years of ser- vice with the Girl Guides. In 1916, Munday was one of the girls who walked behind the Boy Scouts at the Crystal Palace in London to ask Baden-Powell to form a scouting organization for girls. A few months later, his sister started the Girl Guide movement that is international today. Not all family owned funeral homes are gone!
