Applause for film folk Dear Editor: Subject: Councillor Ernie Crist I have never taken the time to write to the editor before, bur after reading the article on Councillor Crist’s desire to stop the film industry from using our parks and recreational facilities 1 feel compelled to do so. T have lived in Vancouver all of my 38 years and am intensely proud of our com- munity, as well as the the Lower Mainland as a whole. Events such as Expo 86, Molson Indy, and major con- ventions have been putting us on the map, and we have all reaped the benefits of this promotion. We have also, through Tourism Vancouver and other agencies, been going after the film industry to welcome them, and encourage them to do their filming in our fair city. With the dollar the way it is, and our magnificent scenery, and our beautiful people, the film indus- try has been attracted to us more and more. Not being in the film industry, I have no idea how involved we are at this point, but from what I see around town, we are a going concern here and I think it is excitin weeks ago, in a park next to us and we were notified by a very informative letter hand-delivered to our door, weeks in advance. It spelled out exactly what they were going to be doing, the times, the _ Show they were filming, and the location they were about to use. Dear Editor: » | Where is drug store? As a‘ Dundarave resident since 1975, I have always _ endeavored to support local . business. I like to walk to the shops in Dundarave and get all-my errands done without having to venture cast to Ambleside. I'm sure the Dundarave Merchants’ . Association would support that view! _ There are lots of gift stores in Dundarave, but now that - Christmas is over and we are + =baek to normal routines, we yg may need more than gifts. ‘In the almost 22 years I "have lived here, we have gone from two drug stores on Marine Drive in Dundarave to none. : Yes, there is a small phar- macy on 24th near Bellevue but other than prescriptions, it carries almost no merchan- dise that drugs stores usually carry. IGA has tried to fill the void by stocking more items than its next-door drug store used to carry, but it doesn’t take the place of a real drug store. Therefore I find myself going to Ambleside more and more to do my shopping because everything I need is there — from the drug store to photo developing to a post office, which we also no longer have in Dundarave either. What is happening to this beautiful local shopping area? I would rather shop in Dundarave but it's becoming increasingly difficult. Hope Dundarave’s We had some filming done a couple of Being a bit nosy by nature, [ rode up on my bike on the way home from my alternative route and saw a couple of helper types setting up for the shoot. They were extremely busy and it was pouring with rain, but when I stopped to ask a few questions, they were more that happy to explain exactly what they were doing. They were friendly, polite and very professional. When I worked at Grouse Mountain for years, the filming industry would come there on occasion to do some film- ing. Every time they were there, they would go about their business in an extremely orderly fashion, clean up after they were done, and pay out their con- tract and pay for any damages that may have oceurred. The public was never inconvenienced, and if there were ever any delays, the public was always quite interested. Let’s face it, people are fascinated with the film industry. When J saw this guy wanting to get the film industry our of our parks and public facilities 1 could not figure out what he was so concerned about. First, he is never going to stop the industry from filming here, because the money that is generated, and jobs that it creates are just too good to stop. I am sure the swimming pool that was closed for haifa day, can use the $2,200 that ic received. How many lockers would they have to rent to make that kind of money? Why then would this councillor want Vancouver: 1040 Denman St. 812 Bute Street 2996 Granville St. 1880 W. Crist, you have com- mitted political suicide. ft is clear that you stand alone on this one! You alone, are trying to stop Hal!ywood ... Good luck! I welcome the film industry to my community with open arms and hope that you enjoy being here as much as } enjoy seeing you here. Feel free to set up shop on my front lawn (for a fee of course) and enjoy all thar is North Vancouver. North Vancouver is the most beautiful place on earth and J am honored that the film industry agrees. Bill Cameron North Vancouver beameron@dircct.ca Long may he burn Dear Editor: ; T spent a wonderful week in North Vancouver last summer with a classmate of mine, who lives in the community. Enjoyed all the many things that are in your area and, while there, was intro- duced to your paper and to Doug Collins’ column. [ find him immensely enjoyable. One needs someone like him to keep some of the seli-righteous souls on their respective toes. Long may his flame burn! All the great men are dying off and 1 don’t feel too well myself.
