ork experience program exami THERE JS a lot of work out there for West Vancouver stu- dents entering the job market, but ii may come in the form of numerous part-time jobs rather ‘ than one full-time position. ' WEST VANCOUVER SCHOOL BOARD By Glen Anwick J... District. career - development _ coordinator’ Barbara Hunter made the point to’ the West Vancouver “school district’s education commit- tee recently as she discussed initia- ‘tives, issues and implications of the work experience and careers pro- gram for senior secondary students. ? Hunter explained that the job . market has drastically changed dur- Today’s secondary school gradu- ates must develop “life-long leam- ing skills” in order to become suc- cessful in the highly competitive job marketplace. She said that the present 30-hour mandatory — work — experience required for graduating students is welcomed in most quarters. However, the program. still encounters some resistance from parents who believe university- bound students shouldn't have to complete the program because “they would have a university degree to fall back on." In this economy Hunter said a degree does not guarantee job suc-_ cess. Hunter advised that students will need to secure other skills such as stress management and computer knowledge. Kit Krieger. of . the West Vancouver Teachers’ Association also offered his own report on issues involving the program. He said it seemed the work expe- rience program was designed for students who couldn't get into ever- shrinking spaces available in post- secondary institutions. School trustee Michael MacDougall said that sinee only one out of 10 students completed univer- sity or college, the work experience program promotes important skills Sunday, February 5, 1995 — North Shore News - 45 in learning. He said that education is a key in enabling those who have completed post secondary studies to survive and become economically indepen- dent by gaining higher-income jobs. Meanwhile new school board chairman Ken Haycock said the school district will focus on major initiatives such as improved com- munications with the community, special education programs and career preparation and work experi-. ence programs. — Haycock said that the schoo! dis- trict has been “at the forefront’ of pushing for numerous career prepa- ration and work experience initia- tives which are now being intro- duced by the Education Ministry. The board, he said, will continue to lobby for a range of job opportu- nities that are appropriate for its stu- dents as they enter the next century. ” ing the past decade, ° CANADIAN POWER ‘AND SAIL SQUADRONS 7 ‘That’ s our goal; ‘we'd ilke to make it yours.
