you please. I am Princess
Caraboo if you don’t please.
Based on a true story, an
exotic-looking vagrant
(Phoebe Cates) dressed in
Oriental garb and speaking
an unknown tongue, is
accepted into England’s aris-
tocratic circles.

But is she.really a Javanese
royal, shanghaied by pirates until a
daring escape landed her on the
shores of a decidedly crue} land?
After all, justice for beggars in
1817 was a swift hanging. Perhaps
beautiful “Princess Caraboo” is just
eluding the noose.

Among the doubting Thomases
are her two social-climbing bene-
factors, Mr. and Mrs. Worrell (Jim
Broadbent, Wendy Hughes), their
caustic Greek butler Frixos (Kevin
Kline) and a jaded journalist
(Stephen Rea) who sees this story
as the peak of his rather flat career.

And let’s not forget the profes-
sor (John Lithgow), an Asian cul-
tures expert who can’t wait to make
a scholarly investigation of her tat-
tooed thighs.

Headed by a terrific cast,
Princess Caraboo bobs along enter-
tainingly. Kevin Kline’s comedic
performance stands out with an
accent as thick as his mutton-chop
sideburns.

Writers Michael Austin and
John Wells have made sure that all
of the characters are well-rounded,
even a gentle melancholy to that
comic staple, the sexually repressed
academic, splendidly played by

Georgian country life in meticulous
detail, with a particularly winning
segment as the Princess waltzes
with the Prince Regent at a masked
bali that turns into a royal conga
line.

There are only a couple of quib-
bles. Besides being a tad long,
Cates has more chemistry with
Kevin Kline than with her supposed
love interest, Stephen Rea.

However, since Cates and Kline
are real-life Mr. and Mrs., that’s
forgivable.

My Fair Lady kkk; (CBS/
Fox Video) Unrated

George Bernard Shaw, with a
little help from maestros Lerner &
Loewe, told a similar tale of a raga-
muffin elevated to nobility.

However, after 30 years of
neglect, it looked more like My So-
So Lady. The team that rescued
Lawrence of Arabia and Spartacus
have put the bloom back into
Audrey Hepburn’s roses and Rex
Harrison’s rages.

The video box set includes an
hour-long documentary showing
the restoration as well as never-
before-seen footage, and a truck-
