Innovations make stereos safer THE MORE time one spends in an automobile audio systems or car stereo store, the more difficult it becomes to visualize any one of the multitude of displayed items inside - an actual car, By Aotert Galster Contributing Writer The shimmering black finishes predominant in today’s market sport countless dials representing literally hundreds of options. Among those options several are not only new, but also intriguing, First, what started out as the manufacturers’ response to increas- ing car theft is today still evolving. The removable stereo or shuttle deck was designed to help offset numerous break-ins and subsequent thefts from autos focusing mostly on car audio systems. The result is the detachable face unit which uses the same principle as the original shuttle deck, but is more portable, Rather than lugging around a whole stereo, itis now possible to remove just the front Yace of the stereo without compro- mising the unit's safety. Bill Denison, sales manager at Performance Car Stereo, says the popularity of detachable fave units has increased dramatically. “They've been out the last cou- ple of years, but now everyone has got them,” said Denison, “It's ata point now where you almost can’t buy one that's not detachable.” Another recent innovation is valled Radio Data System (RDS). ft identifies the stations not only by their frequencies, but also by their call letters which are displayed alongside the frequency. In addition, RDS enables the lis- tener to choose stations by the for- mat of the station preferred, For example, it can be set fo rock and will automatically change between rock stations only. Another RDS feature allows a commuter to set the system to auto- matically switch to any station NEWS photo “Cindy Goodman offering tratfic information, The system will also set the clock auto- matically, eliminating the often problematic search for instructions every time the clocks are reset dur- ing the spring and fall. Finally, Denison says that although there is no new CD tech- nology other than the units getting smaller, present technology has been improved. “The beauty of a car CD now is that the units don’t skip anymore.” Denison adds that complete car stereo systems can be quite expen- sive, up to $30,000. So he suggests gradually building a complete sys- tem and if new innovations come along the way, upgrading is also an option, AirCare SPECIALISTS Our 3 36th Year” & Tune-ups % Fuel systems * Electrical AirCare Gov.
