G: Increased thirst can be triggered by a variety of conditions. the most common being chronic renal (kidney) failure (CRF). One-third to 1/2 of cats over 12 years of age are afflicied. CRF cats suffer from progressive weight Joss as well as increased water intake. They have high levels of “blood poi- sons” - protein byproducts normally cleared by the kidneys. Kidney failure is not curable but low protein diets can be helpful. Diabetes is another common feline ail- ment. Diabetic cats drink large volumes of water, urinate a lot, and lose weight. They have high blood and urine sugar levels. Diabetes is treated by giving daily insulin injections, Hyperthyroidism (tumor of the thyroid gland) is the third most common cause of increased thirst. Hyperthyroid cats have an overactive metabolism which causes them to jose weight despite a voracious appetite. They have an ele- vated level of thyroid hormone in their blood. The disease can be controlled with medication or cured with surgical removal of the thyroid gland or radioac- tive iodine treatment. Q:My dog has chronic ear problems-is there any cure? Or. G:You most likely have a floppy- eared dog such as a Cocker Spaniel or one of its distant cousins. These dogs are prone to frustrating chronic ear problems. While there is no curz, you can get your dog onto a cleaning pro- gram that will minimize flare-ups. First, get the current inflammation resolved with help from your veterinari- an. Ear ointments, oral antibiotics, or other medications may be required. Next, get on a routine ea: cleaning pro- gram. A clean, dry ear is less suscepti- ble to infection, Cleansers designed for the ear must be used-not water, not alcohol, and not mineral oil. The ear flap and the ear canal should be cleaned thoroughly, then dried. Daily cleaning is required initially. Once the condition improves, start skipping days. Eventually, weekly cleaning may suf- fice.
