Beauty industry raises funds

Canada is abused. Statistics
also reveal that 45% of
women experience violence

That's why some members of
the beauty community feel it’s time
to do something about it.

an evening beauty seminar at The

ago, with all proceeds going to the
North Shore Crisis Services Society

away with a bag of goudies from
Clarins. with products to keep skin
in peak condition and help ward off
acostly visit to Gelfant’s
Vancouver practice.

Over $3,700 was raised through
admission to the seminar, proceeds
from the auction and the sale of
mauve ribbons, which NSCSS has
adopted as a symbol of hope for
battered women. Emily Murphy
Hause is halfway towards its goal
of $500,000 needed for the new
shelter bul with construction slated
for May. more support is sorely

The Body Shop is also doing its
part to find a cure.

On March t, The Body Shop
launched its month-long public
awareness and fundraising cam-
paign, in cooperation with the
YWCA of Canada and the
Canadian Women's Foundation.

The Body Shop has adopted the
daisy — “he loves me, he loves me
not...” —- as a symbol to stop vio-
lence against women,

On Tuesday, the skin- and hair-
care retailer wiil offer daisies to

“local women’s organizations,

my white silk blouse. What hap-
pened?

A\ 2 vniortunatey, we have seen this
problem all too often, The staining is due to
perspiration. Perspitation is composed of
98 percent water and two percent other
substances. ft contains ammonium com-
pounds, urea, amino acids. oils, lactic acid,
chloride salts and other residues. These
substances can cause unsightly yellow stains
especially on silk, The age of the stain and
the heat of cleaning and pressing will cause
these substances to oxidize and yellow.
Also. fresh perspiration is acidic but later
decomposes to an alkaline condition upon
contact with bacteria on the skin and in the
air, Differences in the pH will occur due to
variances in people's diets, medications.
and lifestyle. If perspiration remains on the
fabric, it will became alkaline. Silk is very
susceptible to becoming discolored by alka-
line agents, Also, the chloride salts in per-
spiration can weaken fibers. eventually
forming holes.

Hf you should notice fairly strong odors of
perspiration or sec yellowing beginning to
occur, special steps should be taken to min-
imize or prevent these conditions. The odor
and staining from perspiration are not
always readily removed in drycleaning.
