Fancy dancers, renovation scams

SENIORS ARE favored targets of the unscrupulous, ac-
cording to a chief investigator with the provincial ministry
of housing, recreation and consumer services.

Michael Wood, chief in-
vestigator for consumer opera-
tions, previded an example at a
group of seniors gathered at Silver
Harbor Centre in North Van-
couver.

“*We used to have a real prob-
lem with dance studios
especially with widows,”’ he said.

Wood recounted one in-
vestigative operation he conducted
under cover, ;

Wood told of a !oca! 87-year-
old woman who paid $14,000 for
$3,000 worth of work to her

- house.

“Once you are identified as an
easy mark, word spreads around
con artists,"’ Wood said.

He recalled the case of a 93-
year-old woman who was billed
$65,000 for electrical work which
was later found to be of poor
quality. Authorities were able to
press the issue in court.

The con in question was
sentenced to two years in jail and
was ordered to pay full restitution.
