performance. Sudden bumps
create a noticeable side-to-side
shaking motion in the steering
wheel, probably because of its
front live axle.

A two-speed (Low/High) trans-
fer case works in conjunction with
the four-speed automatic
transmission to offer a total of
eight forward gears and two
reverse gears. The permanently
engaged four-wheel-drive system
uses a viscous-coupled cenire dif-
ferential to divert power to the
front or rear wheels as needed.

Off the pavement, there are few
production vehicles that can
match the Range Rover’s perfor-
mance.

The automatic self-levelling
air-spring suspension cushions
hard bumps well and keeps occu-
pants in a reasonably horizontal
position. Vertical wheel travel is
generous — 20 cm (7.8 in.) in the
front, 28 cm (10.9 in.) at the rear
— and maximum ground clear-
ance under the differentials is 20
cm (7.8 in.).

The combination of full-time
4WD, traction control, and
four-wheel disc brakes with ABS
gives the Range Rover amazing
traction on seemingly untraver-
sable terrain. The big Rover will
sidestep tree trunks, boulders, and
plough through mud bogs and
small ponds: — up to 55 cm (21.5
in.) deep — while keeping occu-
pants snug and comfortable inside
the well-appointed interior.

The. big, bright interior offers
excellent outward visibility, clearly
visible instruments, attractive
Jeather upholstery, walnut trim,

high centre console and even a
walnut-trimmed shift lever. A
120-watt Pioneer AM/FM
stereo/cassette/CD player, and
keyless central door locking and
alarm are also standard equip-
ment.

However, luxury and versatility
has its price.

With its heavy curb weight,
permanently engaged four-wheel
drive and br: ¢ aerodynam-
ics, the Range Rover’s fuel con-
sumption is comparatively poor. |

engine under the hood!

o Multi-port or multi-point fuel
injection — a type of fuel injec-
tion where at least one injector is
used for each cylinder of the
engine. This, compared to a sim-
ple fuel-injection type, allows for a
more precise ‘control of the fuel
delivery because each injector is
designed to meet the need of each
cylinder.

A fuel injection is a system that
accurately measures the amount of
fuel to the engine based on a
number of factors. Virtually all

new cars are equipped with fuel
injection, but not all of them have
the multi-point type.

@ Redline or redzone — If you
look at the tachometer of a car,
the upper range is indicated by red
color. This is the engine’s RPM
{revolutions-per-minute) limit. In
other words, don’t rev the engine
beyond the redline or damage can
result because) of the excessive
movement of the cylinders.
Actually, new cars have fuel
cut-off at the redline, shutting
fuel off momentarily to the engine
to prevent tlie RPM from getting
any higher.
