BOUT 300 of the ‘coolest cats on the coast” (ac- cording to the invitation) showed up at the Bar- racuda Club for the ‘‘MuchWest-Speakers-Corner -On-The-Road,-Much-On-The-Mountain/Snow-Job ‘92- Say-Hello-To-Moses-And-Denise extravaganza.” One purpose of the party was ihe introduction, to media and music industry types, of Denise Donlon, who is now MuchMusic’s director of music programming. Donlon, who is also mate to singer Murray McLaughian and mother of their son Duncan, has just switched from producer/on-air host of MuchWest/CityTV. Of the promotion of Donlon, who is highly experienced in music publishing and record label administration, Much president Moses Znaimer says that “the timing couldn't be better to ap- point a formidably tatented woman to (this) sensitive job.” { have no idea of what he means by that — sounds like something Bill Clinton would say. (Gee, § hope Donlon’s nanny is legit.) Znaimer also introduced MuchMusic’s ‘‘Speakers’. Corner On The Road,’’ Much’s special video booth. You get in, pay $1 (the money goes to charity), look at the camera, say whatever you want and the most compelling messages will be aired (incredibly, 1 couldn’t think cf a thing to say). Znaimer, pointing out that “talk is deep,” wants to “broaden the range of voices on television’ and to “expand the number of real people on the air’’ — as opposed to imitation people, | suppose. The Barracuda Club, by the way, is the fourth of its kind, after The Soho Cafe, Automotive and Bar None. The formula for these clubs is so easy, | don’t know why someone doesn't open one on the North Shore. You buiid a bar, slap some paint on the walls, throw in six to eight pool tables and a great sound system and voila! — the young and hip will beat a path to your door. The North Shore is also in need of a decent place to dance. Cur- rently, the best downtown clubs for dancing are Graceland (young), Luv Affair (LOUD!) and Celebrities. So if you feel like playing pool or dancing, check these places out. A warning about Celebrities, though: if your date is even slightly homophobic, call him a cab. kK Not that this is related in any way, but the North Shore Multicultural Society is launching Multicultural Week with a party at North Van's Cheers Restaurant this Friday night. The keynote speaker will be Anita Hagen, deputy premier/ minister of education/minister responsible for multiculturalism arid human rights.
