Fuel injection systems are coming on the market. Computer chips are going to be the next wave. It's quite possible that some of our Weber carburetors are cleaner than the origina! carburetors.”’ Hilton points to his new Piae lighting display. *‘They’re Japa- nese and they're probably the best lights in the world. Quite expen- sive, but worth it.” There’s also a small display area devoted to car books with a good selection of Haynes and Bentley Shop manuals for the do-it- yourselfers, as well as an extensive variety of books for car en- thusiasis. Signage is in Chinese as well as Engiish, and almost all salespeople speak both Cantonese and Eaglish. Tucked away in a corner of Aberdeen Centre is B.C.’s newest auto store, Aberdeen Autoworld. Autoworld owner Edward Chan is originally fom Hong Kong, and says most of his clientele con- sists of young Chinese men. “In Hong Kong it costs about twice as much to buy a car and ten times as much to maintain it. Most young people could not af- ford to own a car there. But here they can."” Autoworld stocks a variety of performance parts and automotive accessories. Fog lights, mirrors, sun/shade windew stickers and air fresheners are their most popular items, but they also stock performance ex- hausts, alloy wheels, Momo steer- ing wheels, replacement stainless- Steel accelerator and brake pedals, and other performance items. Momo steering wheels range in price from about $280 to $600. Alloy wheels start at $400 and up. Autoworld also has a prominent Blaupunkt stereo display and a good selection of car alarms. Chan says most of his Chinese customers own Japanese or Ger- man brand cars, so his after- market products are targeted towards the import market. “They (Chinese customers) are very concerned about reliability. They don’t want a car that keeps breaking down, because then they have ww deal with the service department or manufacturer, and there may be a language barrier."’ It’s our gift to you when you make a donaticn to the North Vancouver Christmas - Bureau (while quantities last). Pick up your calendar, with photographs taken by North Shore News photographers, at the North Shcre News recep- tion desk.
