HEN IT comes to Arnold Schoenberg, you can count on several possibilities — either you've never heard of him, never heard his music, or, if neither of those apply, you’re ambivalent at best. {tis no mystery that Schoenberg is not regularly encountered in most CD collections, though, _ ironically, he is responsible for the music of several composers who are. Schoenberg's undeniable place in music history stems from his - development of an original method of musical organization based on 12 new musical tones, This became the foundation for an entirely new musical language and was readily adopted by the - more popular Alban Berg and An- ton von Webern as well as several others. i, however, your “excessive modernism’ warning lights are flashing, fear not — Schoenberg was the composer of musical musics, free of the excesses of &4 Schoenberg is not regularly encountered in most CD collections, though, ironically, he is responsible for the music of several composers who are.99 many contemporary impres- sionists. That point is well demonstrated in this CD which is definitely a Schoenberg for the masses. lt contains some of what is arguably the best of Schoenberg's chamber works and carries a lively proselytizing potential — if given a chance. Schoenberg's first true master- piece, Verklarte Nacht — Trans- figured Night — starts us off. Originally written for string sex- tet in 1899 when Schoenberg was only 25, we have the revised ver- sion for chamber orchestra that the composer devised himself Ross MacDonald MUSIC REVIEW some 44 years later. Both versions are particular * favorites though this younger sibl- ing will have a strategically broader appeal! because of its richer textures. Programmatically bound by the Richard Dehme! poem about a - young girl telling her lover that she is pregnant by the lucky fellow who previously held that title, . there is plenty of room for texture which both Schoenberg and Ven- zago ably fill. Schoenberg defined his “method of composing with 12 different'notes related entirely to one another’ in 1921 so this ver- sion falls equally far into the “after’’ side as the original did the “‘before.” Fortunately, Schoenberg resisted temptation so we stil! get.the essential flavor of a young pre-12- tone Schoenberg without ex- cessive alterations. We should resist temptation ourselves and not . crank up the stereo when the music begins — it soon rises to an audible leve!. ‘The Suite in G fur Streichar- chester is the longest and also most curious of the three works. It was written in 1934, just a year after Schoenberg’ s arrival in America. ° He had immigrated from Austria to escape the likes of von Karajan by accepting an invitation from Joseph Malkin to teach at his Con- servatory in Boston.
