36 ~ Wednesday, June 10, 1992 —- North Shore News a NEWS photo Mike Wakofield 12 WORKS by Gordon Smith are now on view at the Seymour Art Gallery, Smith celebrates nature in first show at new facility HE NAME Gordon Smith is something of ‘a talisman among Vancouver art enthusiasts. By Ron Fatcioni Now Repurt indisputable in the company of such artists as Jack Shadbolt and Bill Reid, he is a true giant, univer- sally respected beth nationally and abroad. For our own Seymour Art Gallery (4360 Gallant Ave., North Vancouver) to feature a cross-sec- tion of his current work in its opening exhibition program is an event not to be ignored. Patrons of the arts on the North Shore should be duly grateful and unreservedly attentive. Presented in the new exhibition facility of the Deep Cove Cultural Centre are 12 works embodying a variety of technical media typical of the artist. All are creations that celebrate the forms and forces of nature with uncompromising vi- ston and consuramate technical skill. Ranging from lyrical monotype watercolors through tight naturalist drawings and abstract acrylic paintings of considerable dimen- sions, these pieces all reflect the enduring preoccupation with the natural world that is the source of the artist’s inspiration. In a third of the work the moods of winter predominate, particutarly in Winter December 1990, a bald painterly study of considerable force that conveys great tranquility in its raw naturalism. Also of particular interest are three untitled canvases that ex- plore the forest from a totally dif- ferent perspective. Abstracted almost beyond recognition, these three works introduce into the domain of the natucal, elements drawn from the artificial realm of human rationality. The apparent imposition of geometric and typographical forms, rather than cormpromising the vision of nature portrayed, in- tensifies it and brings into play compositional forces that heighten the seductiveness of the paintings. For the most part, these are works of art of great power and subtlety, works that leave us with the conviction that we are truly in the presence of an accomplished painter, : lf you have not yet made the ef- fort to observe the new Deep Cove Cultural Centre first hand, this show will provide an excellent reason to do so immediately, !t is not a great distance, and it is cer- tainly worth the 15-minute excur- sion to Deep Cove. Amidst all the dross that mas- querades as art on the North Shore, an exhibition of this stature is ail too rare an occurrence. it wil! be on display only for a few more days. Don’t miss it.
