The absence of guitarist anu
Eurythmics partner Dave Stewart
has removed much edge, the cer-
tain spark of danger that allowed
some of the raunchier Eurythmics
output to straddle the worlds of
rock and pop at will.
Lennox as diva performs at a

sonic and lyrical level several steps,

removed from the raw bravado
strut of Savage. She's back to the
moony temperament of Sweet
Dreams.

Ultimately, in terms of artistic
progression, it is a stand-pat effort.
Lennox remains one of the distinct
voices of contemporary pop and
she shares with us new satin
finery, but Diva is not the in-
novaiive and personal
breakthrough it is hyped to be.

Fans refuse to let this hippy
troubadour let go of the past, and
so we find him motoring about
somewhere in mythically charged
waters rounding the Isle of Atlan-
tis.

The 18-track release brings
together mostly re-cooked classics
recorded in acoustically austere
fashion at Carnegie Hall in New
York, the Royal Festival Hall in
London and the Royal Opera
House in Sydney, Australia,

It is a heady hemp-scented trip
for sure. A major guru bonus,
philosophically questing listeners
get the insider's edition of the
George Harrison-penned lost verse
of Hurdy Gurdy Man.

There are new songs, too, such
as Make Up Your Mind. The bot-

affairs of the heart, this stuff would

tasteful musical goodness.
