The book is called Occupied Canada, the idea being that White Canadians are a bunch of ruthless, racist conquerors. The word ‘‘Nazi’’ is not used, but might as well have been. For we are seen as being responsible for all Indian woes. Few would deny that injustices have taken place. They took place in Roman Britain, too. But in this book there is never a word about how we are tossing over $4 billion a year down the insatiable Indian drain, giving them rights that others don’t have, letting them knock salmon on the head in the Capilano, and making fools of ourselves. What we have here is a job of trendy revisionism. Away with history as we know it. Away with the story of a few Mounties bringing law and order to the West. ‘‘History is bunk,”’ said Henry Ford, and the two Bobs say ‘‘Amen to that."’ I knew that the book would be a Song of Lamentations. But | wanted to be kind to it because Bob Hunter is one of my favorite people. If you will pardon a bit of pomposity, though, profes- sionalism got the upper hand. Occupied Canadais not a jour- nalistic examination of the history of conquered and conquerors in Canada. It is a propaganda exer- cise for which the semi-Indian Bob can be excused, but not our Bob, who now claims that he too is one-sixteenth Indian or some- thing. If there is a single good word about poor old dumb Whitey in this work I did not see it. Whitey is a beast. A chapter on the Department of tndian Affairs is in fact called ‘‘In The Belly Of The Beast,”’ in case you don’t get the point. On the flimsiest evidence Cana- dians are accused of having killed half the kids in the Indian schools. Which, without exception it seems, were all swollen versions of Dothebovys Hall. As for the carly Jesuits, they were “‘monsters.’’ That. is the word used to describe Fathers Brebeuf and Lalemant, whose ter- rible deaths by to-ture have still not been forgotten in French Canada. But that atrocity and others like it don’t worry the two Bobs. They attempt to justify them. if we are despicable, the indians are saintly. The Hurons are an example, they having being noted for their spirituality and for hav- ing ‘“‘considered everything froma cosmic point of view’? — whatever that may be. The bit that really got my eyebrows wiggling, however, was the claim that the Indians of yore had a superior political system. Try not to laugh, but the two Bobs say it inspired Sir Thomas More's Utopia, Jean-Jacques ROYAL LePAGE Two Bobs and load of liberal rot DID YOU know you are part of a ‘‘bandit empire?’’ Well you are, according to a book written by Bob Hunter and a semi-Indian who goes by the name of Robert Calihoo. The Indian arts were also some- thing to write home about. Which was why their weaponry never got beyond bows and arrows and the double-bladed knife. **The Indians’ creative energies had gone into art and theatre," say the authors. Of course. No doubt they were busy painting In- dian Mona Lisas, performing In- dian Hamlets and writing Indian Ninth Symphonies. I should mention that Bob Calihoo, the downtrodden semi- Indian, has done well out of his fiendish persecutors. A former jailbird (it was our fault that he was in prison, naturally) he was given a free university education and became chief of the Indian Inuit Employment Section. As such he headed the affir- mative action program that favors Indians over you-know-who. But things didn’t move fast enough for him so he’s now working for Indians on the West Coast. And probably consuming more tar money. This book seems to have been written by our Bob on the basis of the other Bob's research, not a method that I recommend. But it will be greeted with joy by the CBC, the Globe & Mail, the chur- ches, hippies of all ages and those who favor the myth of the Noble Savage. But others should read it too, for it is an example of the liberal rot that is ruining Canada. It wouldn’t surprise me if the two Bobs got the Governor-General’s medal, like the French Quebecer who preached hatred of the “English.” Occupied Canada is published by McClelland and Stewart (who else?) at $26.95. ©) Unsurpassed for ...
