Sometimes we forget Sometimes, in the rush of our day to day existence, we lose sight of some of the more important events in our community. This occurs in the “real” world and it also occurs in the world of games and sport. One of those times was fairly recently and it in- volved the young Lynn Valley baseball team who made it all the way to the provincial finals before being stopped by Trail. While it is probably true that in the overall course of events of our lives, this event was not all that major or world changing. 1s also true that to those youngsters involved, it was one of the most important times of their young lives. And it is in this realm that we often lose sight of what's important. We, as a society, NV slowpitch Snappers and St. Alice are sporting identical records on top of the North Van Slowpitch Leaguc. The two teams have 7-3 records with Tokcland at 6-4 Hardwood Director’s Chair and as so-called sports fans, have become jaded to the day to day existence of those ordinary people around us. We have grown to expect only to hear about the big winners, and losers, in the big settings. SUST AS IMPORTANT And that is too bad. For what these young ballplayers accomplished was every bit as important as what the Yankees or Expos or Pirates do. This Lynn Valley team, and tn fact, all the teams in standings and Masterbatters at 5-6. Van the league, put as much effort and desire into what they do as does any pro. The only real difference is age and skill level. To reach a provincial final m sport or any other en- deavour, at any level, is a major accomplishment. Losing the best of three finals 2-1 was probably pretty devastating — for a while — to the kids, and regrettably, in wanting to know the “results” of the tournament, it is the devastating last game that is remembered. We all need to be reminded (as we were) that there ts a lot more that goes into a championship than simply a “last game”. There is the whole scason, and the coaching, the hard work and the fan. We forget how hard the coaches work with these kids during evenings when they would probably be at home about themselves, relaxing. We forget that in the long run winning is not the im- portant thing. But playing well, having fun, learning, and finding success through hard work is important.
