On April 19, North Vancouver RCMP will be out in force for road checks in North Vancouver City and District. The CounterAttack program combines public education, en- .forcement, research and = com- munity-based programs against drinking drivers. Since 1977, the proportion of alcohol-related traf- fic accidents in B.C. has been reduced by 50 per cent. Program officials estimate that each. year CounterAttack helps save an average of 30 lives, 850 injuries and $13 million. Yet in an average year in the province, alcohol is the cause of about 4,500 property damage ac- cidents, 3,500 personal injury ac- cidents and 200 fatal accidents. In terms of insurance cost, about $60 million is spent to repair the damage done by drink- ing drivers. More than $130 mil- lion is spent on enforcement, court, medical services and other - costs.
