WHAT price safety? That's the tough call facing local politicians dealing with shrinking budgets and increas- ing traffic. Two years ago there were adult crossing guards working in all three North Shore municipati- ties. Now there are 12 and come September there will only be the six that North Vancouver City council has so far agreed to fund in the absence of School District 44 funding. The cost is not inconsiderable. Union guards coliect approximately $62 a dav for their work and city taxpayers will be paying, r about $65,000 s year for their presence. Can parent volunteers fill the gap as they do at Carisbrooke school? The drawback is that there is no overall control over this type of ad hoc approach and key parent involvement is lost as children move on to different schools. A North Vancouver-wide training program has been proposed that would train a few children from cach school in road safety techniques. Police say they have the personnel to help liaise w ith the program and assist with the train- ing. Vancouver and Calgary have run similar programs for over 60 years. Expense? A coordinator’s salary ($40,000) and the costs of a summer training program. It could easily accommodate West Vancouver too. Why isn’t anyone talking about this?
