The District of North Vancouver Fire Department wants you to respond safely in case of an electrical fire. If an electrical appliance catches fire, first try to safely unplug it or shut the power off at the fuse box or circuit’ breaker — but don't risk reaching over the fire to do this. Once the power is off most appliance fires will go out. If you can’t shut off the power, do not use water on the fire! Electricity travels quickly through water and” will seriously injure — even kill — you. Use a portable fire extinguisher that does not have water in it. And remember -- many elee- trical fires can be presented by treating electricity with respect. Don't overload circuits — even plugging in an extra fan or win- dow air conditioner can be tao much, if the circuits are already handling their potential or if the house wiring is old.
