SEYMOUR AREA LA supports schools OPEN LETTER TO MS. HODGSON (PRESIDENT DEEP COVE, DOLLARTON, INDIAN RIVER COMMUNITY ASSN.) Thank you for your recent letter concerning the aced for new clementary school facilities on the North Shore. | agree that we necd two new schools, nat one. The Indian River school should be built on the site which has been chosen by the North Vancouver School Board and the Burrard View School should be replaced by another of similar capacity at Scy- cove. Most of the money will come from the province. The Minister of Education tells me that funds for the purchase of the Indian River land and planning for the Indian River school construction are in our 1988 budget. Construction can, therefore, begin early in 1989. Whether Indian River school will be ready for occupation in September, 1989, is uncertain. However, the minister assures me that every effort will be made to meet that target date. Replacement of the old Burrard View school with a new facility at Sea Cove has been provincial pofi- cy since the late 1970s. Opposition from the North Vancouver District Council prevented the move from taking place when funds were available in 1979, Also forecasts of a dechining clementary school population left. the issue in abeyance in the carly 1980s. Now that the elementary school population in the Deep Cove area is on the increase the Burrard View replacement issue is in front of us again. . Before budgeting can begin the site must be firmed up. Seycove land must be acquired in toto, by the school board. Also, the district ADVERTISING CORRECTION RECORD BREAKING : SALE Page 13 Item A — Dress Slacks. A new year decision to move to the Seycove site would benefit the district by making funds available at an carly date. Rezoning to the highest use and selling the site to a developer or developers in the near future can provide Jand disposal and property tax revenues which would not otherwise be available to the municipality in 1989 and 1990. This short-term revenue to the district could be shared with the school board. T expect that these matters will be addressed shortly and the Minister of Education will then be in a position to honor his cora- mitment to replace the old school at an carly date. The province’s annual budget for new school construction is $55 million, in total, for 1988 and $60 million for 1989. There are numerous demands for new facili- ties in communities throughout British Columbia. So North Van- couver’s (wo requests, totalling $5 to $6 million, must be accommo- dated within the larger numbers. This is therefore a matter of pro- vincial as well as local priority. A ranking process will take place. But J am assured by ithe Honor- able Tony Brummet that Indian River and Burrard View are in the first rank insofar as he and his ministry are concerned, Jack Davis, MLA North Vancouver/Seymaur Patricia Kennedy B.A.; DIP.
