The participation in the 10- kilometre run and the money rais- ed by it were twice what they were in the 1986 run. In all, 420 Run For Research runners helped raise $10,000 in donations and pledges from Sun- day’s run. In 1986, 220 registrants raised $4,400. All funds generated by the run are used to fund community research projects at Lions Gate Hospital. Because LGH is not des- ignated as a research facility, it receives no money from the pro- vincial government for research. In addition to providing funds for research into everything from diabetes to uuclear medicine, Run For Research money helps provide start-up funding to aid the hospital ISED FOR in pursuing larger grants from other foundations and provincial and federal levels of government. There were seven categories in Sunday's race, which began at the William Griffin Centre at 9 a.m. Dennis Grapnon of North Van- couver won the Open Men’s 19-to 39-year-old age division with a time of 35:11, while Carol Mon- tgomery, also of North Vancouver, won the Women's Open in a time of 36:10.
