valuable information to help you
identify your bedding needs, to be
an informed shopper, and get top
value for your investment.

Personal needs to consider are
your height and weig!i; whether
you sleep alone or with a partner;
how much you move about in your
sleep; any back problems or
tendencies to muscle twinges you
may have; whether you like a hard
sleeping surface or prefer softer,
cushioned support.

SPECIAL FEATURES

These factors will affect the type
and size of bed (and which special
features) you should concentrate
on looking for.

Many people don’t realize just
how critical size can be to a really
good night’s sleep — particularly if
you sleep with a partner. Did you
know that a standard double bed
allows two persons no more room
for lateral movement than they’d
each have sleeping in a baby’s
crib?

It’s also six inches shorter than
the standard queen size bed.

An average person shifts posi-
tion between 40 and 60 times a
night during norma sleep. If that
movement is restricted, sleep is
disturbed.

QUEEN OR KING

Partners who move around a lot
in their’ sleep, should seriously
consider getting a queen or king
size bed.

A king size bed is the same size
as two extra-long twin beds side by
side, and an alternative to one king
is to have two twins set up adja-
cent to each other and attached
with interlocking metal frames.
This allows partners to select indi-
vidual mattress firmness prefer-
ences.

If you are over $710’, you will
almost certainly require the addi-
tional Iength provided by a queen
or king size bed. And if you’re
very tall, you’ll sleep better in an
extra long (84’’) bed.

SUPPORT NEEDED

If you decide to move up from a
standard double bed to a king or a
queen size, you will need a bed
frame that’s strong enough to
support the extra size. Queen size
mattresses necd a frame with a
steel centre bar to help distribute
the weight, while a king needs two
foundations locked together for
support and convenience in mov-
ing. :

A bed will las¢ far longer —
especially for heavier people — if a
top quality mattress and boxspring
constructed with extra firm sup-
port is chosen.

People who suffer with back
pain and muscle fatigue also
benefit from extra firm support.
However, specifying an extra firm
mattress no longer means it has to
feel as hard as a board — although
you can get a hard mattress if you
wish. These days, special Jayers of
cushioning materials topped with
quilted foam can provide super
soft comfort without sacrificing
support.

Recent new methods of con-
figuring wire, locking the coils,
and stabilizing the spring unit have
also greatly improved the feel and
dependability of innerspring bed-
ding.

When you are ready to go and
lock at beds, keep these ‘musts’ in
mind.
