of the past is no longer the norm.

Increasingly, the single parent
family is assuming a larger profile
on the demographic landseape,
and this new breed of parent is
frequently unprepared for the de-
mands the role involves —
especially in stretching the house-

In her book, The Child Care
Crisis, Fredelle Maynard points
out that in today’s society 93 per
cent of all families have not
adopted the traditional roles of a
working father and stay-at-home
mother.

Whether because of separation,
divorce or increasingly liberal
societal attitudes, more adults than
ever before have a child but not a
spouse,

And naturally, a one-parent
household means only one source
of income — which is why single
parents face even rougher
economic constraints than most
other families.

As single parents pursue careers
or simply work to provide day-
to-day essentials, they are most
often away from home and must
relinquish the care to professionals
— an expensive proposition.

According to the Social Plann-
ing Council of Canada, the total
cost of sending a child to day care
from an infant to nine years of age
is $39,520 (in 1984 dollars).

And there are many other im-
mediate expenses that compete for
a piece of the single parent's
limited budget.

Medical expenses, funds for
