4 - Friday, February 7, 1986 - North Shore News Union miffed by wage offer UNIONIZED WORKERS at North Shore Neighbourhood House say they are upset that management is refusing to offer a higer wage increase. The union argues since the nou-profit organization is debt- free and anticipates a budget surplus next year, workers should be offered a better contract deal. The 25 members of the Service, Office and Retail Workers Union of Canada, who met. with management Wednesday, claim for three years they have not asked for a wage increase in order to help the house attain financial security. “This is the worst recession in B.C. and these people are now sit- ting back with a surplus and hem- ming and hawing about giving their staff a wage increase,’’ said union representative Joanne Hochu, John Lakes, president of Neighbourhood House, stid the board has offered a three per cent wage increase and a one-year con- tract. “‘There’s no question our employees will get a wage increase. _ The issue is how much,” he said. The workers involved in daycare, programming, accoun- ting, janitorial and clerical services are asking for a 13 per cent wage increase. They have been without a contract since Dec. 31. The two sides met last Tuesday and reviewed the social and recre- ational facility’s financial state- ment, which shows the house paid off a $60,000 debt over the past two years. “They paid off $32,000 last year alone, so you can calculate roughly they will have a surplus of at least that amount to their credit next year and probably more,’? Hochu said. “A non-profit society can’t a Fresh chemically free , Oranges. 796 B reg. 99¢ Ib. Lakes said he appreciates the union’s concern, but the board’s plan to spend money on upgrading the facility will not affect their wage offer. “No money has been put aside AT: S95 Burley Dr. West Van GATEHOUSE MONTESSORI SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE Feb. 10 7-—9pm (in the past) for building im- provements and you can only do that for so long,** he said, noting building i improvements would help increase revenue because more user-fee programs could be of- fered. Lakes said the City of North Vancouver, which owns the building, has an architect currently studying the facility.
