We’re not here to baby-sit, this is a school,’’ says Gerala. ‘Learning re- quires total concentration, and kids learn by watching not horsing around.** Gerela emphasizes that he is not an army drill sergeant, but an advocate of reality over fantasy. Honest assess- ment of player skills, he says, is vital to improving those skills, He adds that these same honest assessments are - what each of us eventually faces as. we dribble our separate ways through life: “is as much/a lesson in facing reality as anything else.” Gerela’s school concen- trates on individual skills over the grand concepts of team play, simply because, he says, the basics come first. The Gerela school incor- porates a five-day course, served up in daily one and a half hour sessions. It runs from August 12 to 16 at North Vancouver’s Norseman Park. Players from ages five to 13 are Separated, . according to skills, into classes of between 12 and 14 players cach. Entering its eighth year, the Brad Higgs summer soc- cer school approaches teaching from the perspective of slightly different philosophies. Higgs, whose courses begin July 1 to 5 at Norseman Park and run through to the end of August at various North Shore parks and in municipalities thoughout the Lower Mainland, is a former Boalkeeper with the MISL’s Wichita Wings and a former member of the Canadian | Olympic soccer team. Higgs says his classes em- phasize the theories and strategies of team play along with the cultivation and development of individual ball skills. . The Higgs school features a total of 20 hours of instruc- tion in five four-hour ses- sions for both boys and girls, ages five through 14. It also has facility for full team in- struction and specializes in. goalkeeping. A North Shore goalkeeping clinic will be held July 22 to 26 at Deep Cove’s Myrtle Park. The North Vancouver Recreation Commission (NVRC) has its own entry in this year’s summer soccer school sweepstakes, with hosts Dary!] Samson and Ted Hamilton coordinating in- struction for. strikers, begin- ners to advanced, and Chris Turner directing the NVRC's goalkeeping school. Classes go 9 a.m. to noon Monday to Friday throughout July and August.
