Auto buyers favor
private enterprise

THE MAJORITY of
Canadians who buy a
used car prefer to buy
from the previous
owner than a used car
lot dealer, a survey of
16,000 Canadians
shows.

The survey, conducted by
the Canadian Automobile
Association, indicates that 43
per cent of those surveyed
bought from a private in-
dividual, while 37 per cent
purchased from a new car
dealer’s iot, and only 20 per.
cent directly from a used car
dealer.

These facts were released
from the nation-wide Vehicle
Durability Survey to gain-ip-
formation for the CAA’s Us-
ed Car Buyer’s Guide, an an-
nual publication.

The survey also indicated
that the average driving
distance of Canadians has
risen by 3 per cent — to
20,216 kilometres this year
from 19,700 kilometres over
the corresponding period in
1983.

“There appears to be a
trend developing toward
more use of the family car for
both business and pleasure,’’
said Mr. Jean Gagnon, presi-
dent of the non-profit CAA.
‘“‘Fuel efficiency, conve-
nience, and the high cost of
other modes of transporta-
tion all contribute to this
increase.’’

The survey also indicated a

continued decline in vehicle —

fuel consumption, with an
average of 10.9 litres per 100
kilometres (26 miles per
gallon).

The Used Car Buyer’s
Guide has also given the
Toyota Celica top car
honors.

The Celica has been named
best foreign or domestic car
in Canada after a survey of
16,000 motorists by the
Canadian Automobile
Association.

The annual Vehicle
Durability Survey revealed
that 99 ht of the owners
of the Celica indicated they
would buy the same car again
given the opportunity.

The award was based on
owner satisfaction,
mechanical reliability and the
number of buyers who would

purchase the car again.
It is the second year in a

row a Toyota has won the |

award. Last year - the first

year the CAA picked a top

car - the Corolla won.

gaid on accepting the award.

. General Motors led North

American vehicles with 63
per cent of owners reporting
‘very satisfied’’, followed by
Chrysler (60.3 per cent), Ford
(58.8 per cent), and
American Motors (54.2 per
cent). This is the first time in
recent years that Chrysler has
placed among the top four,
signalling a favorable  tur-
nabout for the financially
troubled corporation.
