AT - Wednesday, April 11, 1984 - North Shore News EB mailbox [>< | An Easter resolution Public school system should not subsidize an independent school Dear Editor: There has been a great deal of discussion and indeed con- fusion about the recent pro- posal by the North Shore In- dependent School Society to lease space from the West Vancouver School Board. Please allow me to clarify some of the facts: 1. The Independent School has indicated its desire to gperate a K-12 school with approximately 600 students. Nane of the recently closed schools in West Vancouver would be suitable for this purpose. It is therefore ob- vious that the Society ts look- ing to use one of our schools as a short term measure while a suitable facility is either leased or constructed. The long term problem of surplus space would thus remain. 2. None of the closed facilities are standing idle and none have been ruled out for future use by the District. They are currently being used by hundreds of pre-school children and both aduh and youth community groups, most of whom pay rentals. The Independent School Society have requested ex- clusive use of a school. 3. The Independent Schoo! Society have proposed a ren- tal figure of some $60,000. Under current Provincial regulations, the School Board would be allowed to keep only a small percentage of this. However, we would lose a conservative $150,000 in grants and incur substan- tial additional costs to cut this amount from = our budget. We, on the West Van- couver School Board, are public school trustees. By definition, we can only do that which is in the best in- terest of the 5,000 children in the public school system. Very clearly, the proposal by the Independent School Socety does not meet this criteria.Any subsidy provided to that group should come from sources other than the local pubhc school system.
