Bill Ritchie said last week that municipalities should be able to do away with their planning departments once official community plans are in place. “Official municipal plans should be reviewed once every 10 years and that job can be contracted out to the private sector,” Ritchie said. The North Shore mayors, however, are questioning that position. “I believe that the municipality needs the advice of its planning staff in order to negotiate with developers applications under the development permit system,” Derrick Humphreys, mayor of West Vancouver, told the News Tuesday. “Official community plans do provide the basis for the development of a com- munity but in the deatils of a development — the layout, the provision of services, internal road patterns, parks — we need the staff.” Humphreys says. the expertise is needed because “a person elected to council does not suddenly become blessed with all the knowlege in the world.” Mayor Jack Loucks 6 Month full time course @ Starting date Oct. 17/83 © Pilots will enter work force Spring 1984 ¢ for an interview contact ABBOTSFORD FLIGHT CENTER AT 859-4877 wo, 072-5309 ¥* by Judi Sheppard Missett daazerciee is a Registered Trade Marh For info on claeees tn Vancouver, Burnaby, Coq . On those occasions when there are major pieces of property to be dealt with, planning work is done by consultants. “If we had a lot more property (to deal with), we'd want a planning staff,” Loucks said. The district’s request that the provincial government step into the situation has been rejected by the En- vironment and Land Use Committee of the govern- meat, according to the letter. Also according to the letter, the committee sees no “rational reasoning” to use provincial legislation to block the company’s logging plans. The letter also says the provincial cabinet has discussed the situation and decided that no provincial money will be used to compensate the resort for not logging the stand of timber. 3 mee weeeees Rd THEY DO THEY DO.IT TO...
