ove day coming A CRAB DERBY, art display, Search and Rescue demonstration, live music, and many sports events are some of the activities planned for Deep Cove Day on Sunday, September 5. The event is organized by the merchants of Deep Cove, who will be spon- soring many. of the events planned and donating prizes. North Vancouver District council has given its ap- proval for some of the Deep Cove streets to be closed off for a bicycle race. The Crab Derby will be open to children 14 years old and under. All crabs, except the winner, will be thrown back, and the winning boy or girl will receive a prize. Other sporting events include two bicycle races — one off-road for people 16 years and older, and a ten- speed road race open to people 18 years and younger; a canoe race from Panorama Beach to Jug Island and back (one male and one female in each canoe), a volleyball tour- mament and a frisbee contest. There will be live music as well, featuring bluegrass, folk, and reggae music and square dancing. A video history of Deep Cove will be shown. Other activities include barbeques, arts and crafts displays, a demonstration by North Shore Search and Rescue, a water ski show, and an antique auction. Plenty of parking will be available for this Labor Day weekend celebration, says John Kirk, the festivities supervisor.
