Mahood endeg a frustrating

three- weeks in Quebec last’

weekend at the Canadian
Grand Prix. .

The trouble started in
Trois Rivieres when
qualifying on Saturday
afternoon his engine
dropped in power. Later in
the session his engine blew
up, forcing to make a
decision as to Whether to run
the untested back-up engine.
The risk of running that
engine two weeks prior to
the Canadian Grand Prix
seemed to be too great and
Mahood elected to sit out
the Trois Rivieres event. His
qualifying position was 17th
out of 19 cars.

Things were looking
better for Montreal though,
as Andy was able to procure
an engine from a reputable
builder in New York for his
Pentax Cameras Ralt RT1.

Installation of this engine
took place the day before
qualifying, but it took more
than two hours to get the
power plant to run, leaving
some doubt as to the con-
dition of the freshly rebuilt
engine.

On Friday morning
Mahood’s qualifying, times
continued to better when the
Pentax car was called in to
the pits by his crew for in-
spection.

Irregularities in a spark
plug led to deeper in-
vestigation. After the session
they found the piston in
cylinder 4 melting away.

The team spent the next
four hours trying to piece
together another engine, but
stopped when the com-
pression ratio and balance
were found to be too far out
to risk running it.

On Saturday morning it
seemed that except for a few
oil leaks, Andy would place
well in the race, despite a
22nd grid position.

On pole for the race was
Kevin Cogan followed by
Norm Hunter, Rogelio
Rodriguez, Whitney Ganz,
Tommy Grunnah, Jacques
Villeneuve and the rest of
the field.

The race got off to a clean
start with Cogan running
well in the lead. In a few laps
Mahood pulled into 19th
place and he was on the
prowl! for as many positions
as possible

The first driver to retire
was Dan Marvin early tn the
race followed by Rodnguez
and later by Jacques

Meanwhile Walter Alto
of the Nor Westers came tn
2nd in the over 50 category
in’ the Gate Road
Runners 20 mile race in
Stanley Park on October 3

found his way to 13th spot
with only 2 seconds keeping

With ten laps to go
Mahood dropped to 14th
place when his engine began

Andy pulled his car off the
track when a blown main
engine seal forced oil

pressure loss.

The race ended with
Kevin Cogan taking the
checkered flag, Hunter 2nd,

Ganz 3rd, Grunnah, Alien
Berge, Rick Bell 6th and
Mahood finishing in the
points with 15th position.
