(685-5434) At Tamahnous Theatre Thursday, September 10th and Friday, September 11th, Westcoast Actors and Tamahnous Theatre launch their 81/82 Season with “Two by Shepard.” That's two exciting theatre com- panies, each staging an important new play by America’s most innovative playwright, in separate productions, at different theatres. At the Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island, Westcoast Actors presents Shepard’s 1979 Pulitzer Prize winning drama, “Buried Child.” First produced at the Magic Theatre, San Francisco, in June 1978, Buried Child deals with three generations of a very bizarre family and their attempt to guard one dark = secret. Shepard’ s black comedy, set in’ rural Illinois, has reminded critic John Simon of “Hieronymous’ Bosch setting about to improve a Grant Woods canvas.” At the Vancouver East Cultural Centre, Tamahnous Theatre is proud to present the Canadian premier of Shepard’s newest work “True West.” This lean, mean, naturahstic tale of two brothers exposes the im- possible double-binds of ‘real life’ in the wilderness of the suburban frontier. Shepard has pared his newest play nght down to ~ the bone, revealing more starkly than ever before his genius for language and staging. Sh-pard himself has True West said that are feet Street people people. They're neat people who meet Why not join up? Take a walk. people. coma B SUNDAY NITE LIVE! New York Times critic Chive Barnes remarked that Sam Shepard was probably the first person to write “good, disposable drama”. He conjectured that Shepard might “one day go down in history as the man who became to drama _ what kleenex was to the hand- kerchief’.
