C10 - Wednesday, December 3, 1980 - North Shore News Beating the ‘bunking’ price in Great Britain And hostelling around the world The cost of bunking-down in hotels is getting ridiculous. It boils my blood to have to pay over $100 a night to spend a few hours sleeping. Business people are harder hit than the average tourist because they usually have to stay downtown to be available for conferences or in_ those ghastly airport complexes where noise and price go hand-in-hand. As tourists, we fare somewhat better. We can shop around, take our time, use public transport, stay out of town or, if all else fails — stay home. If it suits us, we can trade houses with a family overseas or rent a condo where we can stew-up some of our own meals. It is possible to rent homes, fully equipped, and I've published many sources of these over the past few years. Britain is particularly rich in “country homes to let” ads and a lot of readers tell me that they found excellent value simply by checking a British newspaper or magazine. I've just received a publication from Britain — and how-in-hell they found me Ill never know! — listing scores of British homes available for tourists. The brochures — two — are from Home From Home International Ltd. 30a High Street Haslemere, Surrey GU27 2LA England. One booklet, ‘Self- Catering Holidays’ in Britain”, lists scores af properties, including pic- tures, in all price ranges. They tell yc u exactly what to expect from “bring your own linen” to “car necessary”. Some are sheer luxury — over 1000 pounds a week — while others are in our class Exclusive QUALITY kd Desk 48"x24” *550 Matching Chair 569 The Wicker Place — 52 pounds. The other booklet is called “En-Famille Holidays in Britain” listing quite a few bed and breakfast places, also illustrated. I can’t personally recommend the company as trayel- by Barbara McCreadie I've never heard of it before but it wouldn't hurt to send for the booklets if you are planning a visit to Blighty in the next while. Don't go sending them a whole pile of money until we check them out a Ihittle further but maybe do some “window shopping”. Have any of you readers done business with “Home From Home”? Do us all a favor and give us a rating! Another cheaper way to tour the world is through a membership in 2 hostelling organization. I must shame- facedly admit that I've never spent a night in a hostel in my life but probably that's because I didn't start travelling until Hostels used prefaced with the word “youth” and I considered myself part of the “over the hill gang”. 1 was 30. to come Now, age limits on hostels have kindly been removed and even famihes are taking part. Consider it camping without hauling your equipment! If you're interested in this sort of vacation, contact: Canadian Hostelling Association - B.C. Region, 3425 W. Broadway, Van- couver V6R 2B4. They publish a homey little newspaper which might be of interest even to arm- chair travellers. I'll be visiting the Vancouver operation soon so will keep you posted on the offerings.
