Be careful if you tranquilize your pet

I called our family vet, Dr.
Mo. Miistein at the
Blueridge Animal Clinic.

“Mo, what to do with an
animal that must be shipped
by airline?”

“Tranquilize!”

“Why?”

“The poor beasts need to
zonk out during the flight. It
can be hell for them - afraid,
hungry, thirsty, lost.
Remember that the tranks
last only for 4-6 hours.
Distribute carefully!

“What about animals that
have never been
tranquilized? Can it have a
negative affect?”

“It’s a good idea to try the
drug before you take off.”

“Essential!” (Barbara's

note: I'd never give a drug to
my animais unless we'd tried

it first at home, close to Dr
Milstein who would be ready
to anti-dote the cat or dog
should it be necessary.
Problems with overdosing
and allergies are rare but I’m
not willing to bet the life of
my cat if something odd
should happen.)

Milstein continues: if the
animal has a history of
disease, it is best to return to
the vet who diagnosed the
problem in the first place.
Get a full case~-history and
rely on his recommendations
about drugs!!

Young animals travel best.
Old beasties should travel

are a few tips that may save
you trouble:

1. Never leave your animal
locked in an unventilated car
for more than a few minutes,
especially in the heat.

2. Many experts suggest
bringing along a wire, airline
style, cage for your pet.
When you leave the animal
in a hotel room, lock him up.
A maid, opening the door for
room service, can easily
allow a loose animal to bolt,
or worse, be bitten by a pro-
tective dog.

3. If you're going to tak.
your pet anywhere, be sure
that he is properly identified
